Chelsea Cleveland Bays

Great things come in a plain brown package,

Welcome!

We are a small breeding farm located in southeast Michigan, not far from Ann Arbor, specializing in the breeding of Cleveland Bays. Our goals are twofold: 1) to help preserve the Cleveland Bay breed for future generations and 2) to breed quality horses that we want to ride.

Why Cleveland Bays and Cleveland Bay Sporthorses?

These horses are versatile and athletic, with really great brains. They are found around the world pulling carriages, fox hunting, competing in dressage, eventing, endurance, and in the hunter ring. Cleveland Bay Sporthorses are Clevelands crossed with another breed, such as the thoroughbred, to create a lighter horse.

Cleveland Bays are an endangered breed!

There are less than 1000 pure CBs world wide, and less than 300 in the United States. The were brought to the brink of extinction in the 1970s, and through dedicated efforts have survived, but numbers are still critically low. We will only be successful in saving the breed if we can get them out in public, showing off their talents.

We believe in maintaining and contributing to the genetic diversity of the breed. All of our purebred foals are SPARKS compliant, and we work to keep our inbreeding coefficients as low as possible. I also have a lovely thoroughbred mare who joined my broodmare herd this year and will hopefully create a few CBSH babies.
